Backyard Cleanup and Black Mulch Installation That Actually Made a Difference

Here's what we were working with - an overgrown backyard with weeds towering over the bed edging, plants that had completely taken over, and no real structure to the space. It was one of those yards where the bones were good, but everything growing in it had just gotten away from the homeowner. Happens more than you'd think, especially through the summer months when things grow fast.

We started with a full seasonal cleanup - pulling the overgrowth, clearing out the beds, and getting everything back to a clean slate. Once the beds were cleared, we installed fresh black mulch throughout the entire perimeter, including around the raised galvanized planters and the newly planted tree in the center of the yard. That dark mulch color does a lot of heavy lifting visually. It pulls everything together and gives the whole space a finished look that's hard to get any other way.

We also got some shrubs in the ground along the fence line. Small now, but they'll fill in nicely and give the space a lot more life over time. The crape myrtle in the corner was already putting out blooms, and with the black mulch framing it out, it really pops against that white vinyl fence. These are the kinds of details that separate a yard that just gets mowed from one that looks genuinely cared for.

The before and after here is pretty dramatic. Same yard, same fence, same patio - but it feels like a completely different space. That's what a proper cleanup and a fresh mulch installation can do. No major construction, no huge budget. Just good work done right.

Mulch does more than just look good, too. It helps retain moisture in your beds, keeps weed pressure down, and protects your plant roots. Pairing it with shrub planting gives those new plants the best possible start. It's one of the more straightforward things we do, but the impact it has on how a yard feels is hard to overstate.
